Reuse a Shower Curtain

Monday, June 14th, 2010

SO, what do you do with an old shower curtain? You could toss it where it will languish in a landfill for an eternity. Or you can:

(1) Use it under a high chair (toddlers are messy)
(2) Use it under a bird cage (birds are messy)
(3) Use it under a litter box (cats are messy)
(4) Keep it in the car for an emergency poncho
(5) Keep it in the car to lay on wet ground to change a tire
(6) Use to cover plants in the garden when there’s a frost warning
(7) Keep in the car to use on wet bleachers at a ball game
(8) Keep in the car to use under a picnic blanket
(9) Use a a dropcloth when painting
(10) Use as a tarp over the grill, motorcycle, or patio furniture
(11) Make a Girl Scout Sit-Up-On
(12) Sew a beachbag or tote
(13) As a temporary cover over a broken window
(14) Recover outdoor cushions or chairs

The list goes on…..

What’s your best idea?

Everything AND the Kitchen Sink

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Some folks say that I’d reuse everything somewhere, somehow, everything but the kitchen sink.

Uh, they were wrong.

I can reuse a kitchen sink!!!

There’s no better spot for an old kitchen sink than out by the garden. Take your fresh picked veggies right over and wash them off.

I made this one with several cement blocks stacked, the sink setting on top and the garden hose run through where the faucet would go.

It works great. Everyone that sees it says “Wow, why didn’t I think of that?”

I have to admit, I had the sink for a really long time before I figured out what to do with it!!!!

Reuse

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

If you’ve racked your brain and you can’t figure out ‘what’ to do with an item to repurpose it, and you sure don’t want to trash it, and you’ve no place to store it, what do you do?

You can list it on Craiglist.

You can put it on a local bulletin board.

You can sell it at a garage sale.

You can sell it on Ebay.

You can donate it.

I’ve never tried Craigslist as I live too far out, but I’ve sold everything imaginable at both a garage sale and on Ebay. There’s a purchaser for everything! Seriously.

Do you have something you don’t know what to do with? Please share, maybe we can come up with an idea or two…

Old Water Hose

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

What to do with an old water hose. I asked Dad why he was keeping his old wore-out no-good-end water hose he had draped over a hanger at the shed. Seems he uses it whenever he has to run a wire over something that’s potentially wet or sharp.

Good idea Dad!

Guess where I’m going to use mine next?

Under the driveway to hold the wire for my invisible dog fence!

Thanks Dad for the reusing tip!

Reusing

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I’ve told you before that I get my frugal ways from my folks, well, yesterday, I got to see another frugal moment at my folks place.

I was unloading things for the garage sale, when Dad saw that I had a hand held holepunch out for sale. I had a dime on it as it was a little rusty from being in the garage. Anyhow, Dad says “Hey, I think I need this.”

“Dad, it’s rusty.”

“Oh, I just want the spring off of it.”

LOL - Seems he had something that was wore out that needed a spring just that size! That’s putting your frugality to good use!

REUSING To Go Cups

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I think I got a lot of my frugalness from my folks. Mom and Dad like to go to McDonalds for breakfast, so much in fact that they go there (in the next town over) once a week!

They save their McDonalds coffee cups all year long. Come springtime, they use them as pots for garden seedlings.

What a great way to reuse something that would ordinarily have just gone straight to a landfill!

Butter Wrappers

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Those of us who grew up with country grandmothers, or frugal moms, learned lots of little tips and ways to save, reuse and repurpose lots of things long ago.  But many people grew up eating boxed hamburger helper.  For those folks, and for a refresher course for the rest of us, I’ll be listing little tips as I do them, or ‘remember’ them!

I told you today about buying butter in bulk.

Do you know what you do with the paper wrapper the butter quarter  came in?

Save it.  Fold it in half and put it in the fridge.  You can find a spot to keep them, or put them in a resealable baggie, or plastic container or the butter compartment.  WHY?

Next time you bake cookies, or need to grease a cake pan, you’ll have a butter wrapper on hand.  There’s just enough residual butter on the wrapper to grease a cookie sheet or two.  Wipe and toss.

Save a butter wrapper – save the world.

LOL  - well it’s a start – we can’t all be heroes!
