Stretching Dollars

Comingled

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Today I’m sitting here in a little restaurant where the food is mingled cuisines, in other words, there’s a little Mexican and little Italian and even a little Greek.

Because there are SO many choices, I opted for something I’ve not ever had before, a Greek meal which included Greek yogurt. You might ask “What is Greek yogurt“?

Good question. It has a very different flavor to me (since I’m used to the usual fruity combos found in the refrigerated section of your store for ages and ages).

To me, it’s tangier. You might even find it smoother. It’s closer to nature, that is for certain.

Want to try it yourself? Grab yourself some Greek yogurt coupons and get to the store! You’ll prove yourself frugal for using the coupons and smart for choosing a healthier alternative to regular yogurt!

Strong Bones

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Choosing a calcium supplement can be very confusing. Some folks say you need a certain kind of calcium, others say calcium from a certain source.

Some want you to add magnesium and some Vit D.

And then there’s the TASTE.

Most of the ones I’ve taken have fallen into the ‘not quite tasty’ category. Sure I can chew it up today, tomorrow and maybe next week, but after a week or so, I just can’t force myself to chew the chalky thing up.

You can learn about different calcium supplementation, just click here.

Plastic Retains

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

We all know that plastic containers retain some oil and foodstuffs. If you’ve ever stored a tomato based food in some plastic, you know what I mean….

Plus we’ve all learned that some plastic leaches chemicals.

Yuck!

So what do we do about it?

Well, I order my essential oils from a supplier that has the oils distilled and immediately placed into NEW stainless steel barrels. The stainless doesn’t pick up any residue and can be cleaned and reused.

What does your EO supplier store in?

Egg Toaster

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Have you seen one of these egg toasters?

I saw them for the first time last holiday season and my first thought was that they’d be good for college students.

It’s been a whole year now, and I’ve decided that I want one.

I think that with this little gem, I’d have time to toss in an egg, and a muffin and while I’m doing my daily ‘throw everything that has to go with me in the car’ my breakfast would be cooking and ready when I’m ready to walk out the door.

I normally wait until about an hour and a half AFTER I get to work to grab a bite. That’s three and a half hours that I’ve been up. Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day, and I’m pretty sure that you’re supposed to ‘break that fast’ a little earlier than I’ve been doing it.

Since I decided that I wanted one of these egg toasters, I went looking for one. They aren’t as prevalent as they were last year, but I found one at Macys.com. (Santa are you listening?)

And being the frugal person that I am, I’d like to tell Santa that he can find a Macys promo code that will save him a little money, so that he can find a little something for my stocking.

Forgot to Eat

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

I’m running around here trying to get many different things accomplished while I’m off work and Lordy if I didn’t forget to each lunch today.

I’m starving. That means I’ll probably chow down at dinnertime.

Why’d I forget to eat?

It wasn’t because of a diet pill although I’ve heard good things about the phentermine reviews. It’s because I’m busy, busy, BUSY with a capital B.

I decided, on a whim, to start a new ecommerce business and the new one, combined with the one I already had has me processing orders ALL DAY LONG.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m pleased as punch. Speaking of punch. I’m hungry!

Discovered Cooking

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

I think my grown daughter has discovered the art of cooking. Oh, now don’t get wrong, she’s a great cook, always has been, it’s just that lately she’s started to come into her own as a cook.

It’s great. She’s discovered new ways of making dishes and adding a flair of her own. Her family sure benefits.

And now, assuming of course, that she doesn’t actually read my blog, I have to say that I’m considering buying her some fancy new cooking tools as part of her Christmas gifts.

That way as she expands her knowledge she’ll have the supplies necessary.

Bulk Storage

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Do you buy in bulk?

Do you have a storage method to keep your long term foodstuffs?

I have one of those vacuum sealers and I love it! I use it to vacuum seal canning jars that I keep beans in. All different kinds of beans.

Rice too.

When I run out of jars, I use the bag system. Beans store well vacuum sealed in the bags, it’s a little costlier, but the finished product takes up way less space.

That way you can buy the BIG bag of beans (or rice or whatever) and not have to worry about using it all up before it goes stale.

Vacuum sealing works!

Local Food Savings

Monday, October 25th, 2010

We all know we ‘want’ to shop at the Farmer’s Market and we all know we should eat more local, but I’d venture a guess that for many of us, we just can’t see ourselves paying the higher prices that the market asks.

I recently compared the price of a ‘big bunch’ of jalapenos for a canning project. The big bag of jalapenos at the local membership store was very reasonable. Similar jalapenos at the Farmers Market, while probably much more organic and certainly local were much higher priced.

Then I checked the local food coop.

Jalapenos there were sold by the bushel, and for about the same price as the big membership store! They’re certainly local as you get them straight from the grower, and probably organic as well.

Next time I have a putting up project, I’ll be comparing prices and I’ll probably go with the coop.

Is there a coop around you?
