Stretching Dollars

Earth Friendly Business

Friday, April 13th, 2012

When you are a business owner (or even a small crafter - hey that’s a business) and are attending some event. Say a business opening, the promotion of a new product, or even a craft show, you know that the products you use in that event reflect upon you and your business.

With so many people looking out for the planet do you want to be the only vendor using styrofoam? Heck no!

There are new environmentally friendly promotional items out there that will reflect well upon you and your company. Everyone’s toting around those reusable grocery bags, even carrying their lunch in them. A tote bag emblazoned with your logo? Priceless. Stainless steel reusable water bottles? That’s another great eco-friendly item.

Think about what your promo items reflect. Don’t just go by cost, or color. Look for local and Canadian eco friendly promotional items for your business, and you’ll be known as one of the earth-friendly companies!

Need Some Motivation?

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

We all set goals, some more often than others, with the majority of people setting new goals on the first of the year.

Let’s not call them resolutions, lets call them goals. Resolutions are stark, point blank and sometimes tough. Goals can be done in steps.

One of my goals this year is to read more. What were my steps?

Acquire a Kindle and learn how to use it. (That’s working out well by the way, on book # 4!). I also set a goal for myself of posting (on at least one of my blogs) every single day. You see I have ‘ahem’ several…. and trying to post to all of them every day just wasn’t working, especially when you toss into the mix 2-3 e-commerce stores, and a full time job…

Anyhow, you too can learn how to set goals, and then bigger goals and how to actually accomplish them.

You learn to let go of the things that don’t matter, delegate some things that do, and do the things that ‘you’ need to do, whether that’s something creative, learning something new, or taking on a new challenge.

Blue Collar Buddha is one of those rare books you just can’t put down. Author Paul Streitz chronicles his struggles to overcome heartbreaks in life and business as he strives for a fulfilled, successful life – and imparts valuable lessons. Maybe something we can all learn from! Visit Blue Collar Buddha to learn more.

A Fine Mess

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Down the road from me a ways is a lot that had a couple old trailers on it, and some other ramshackle buildings.

The owner died a couple years ago and it looks like his relatives finally took an interest in cleaning up the place.

The first thing they did was spray paint FREE on the trailers.

The trailers disappeared pretty fast. They probably went for scrap.

BUT, whomever hauled them off must’ve dumped the entire contents out in the yard.

It’s a real mess.

I don’t believe the family can handle the new mess all by themselves. They’re going to need a Junk Removal Company to come out, probably with a front end loader and a roll off dumpster in order to take care of that mess.

Whether you’ve got a little mess to clean up (abandoned barns come to mind) there’s always a company around that can help, both here in the US as well as Junk Removal Canada.

Once they get that lot cleaned up I suspect they’ll be able to sell it for a pretty penny. It’s right on the corner of the highway!

Funky Glasses

Monday, September 19th, 2011

It seems like every year, the thing that daughter asks for, either for her birthday or Christmas is a new pair of glasses.

I know!

Kids, even grown kids are never happy with the bargain eyeglass store. They want the high dollar ones at the mall!

I’ve decided that this year, when she asks, and I know she will, that I’ll spring for the doctor’s appointment, but then I’m going to set her down in front of my computer and have a choose a stylish pair of eyeglasses online!

These days you can find designer brands, high-end styles, and glasses that are just ‘too cute’ at such reasonable prices that you can get two pair! I’ve done the two pair ‘thing’ before and I usually get sunglasses for the second pair.

At the prices you’ll find online, you could even get MORE pairs than two for the same amount of money you’d spend in town, OR LESS!

Think about it, I could get her a stylish pair for work, a pair of sunglasses and a pair of FUNKY bright colored ones. Something wild that I could never spring for in town.

Now, hopefully, someday she’ll have employment with benefits that include glasses, but until then, online it is!

Ways to Increase Your Income From Your Car

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

If you’re one of the many people who view their car as a gas guzzling expense then why not turn the tables and look at ways of making money from your vehicle? There are a surprising amount of different methods that you can use to turn expense into a tidy profit, ranging from the obvious to the bizarre.

Sharing Rides

This is a fairly obvious way to save money in the first instance and it’s easy to arrange a shared journey into work or school. You may feel uncomfortable about charging money for this type of service but it’s a good place to start trimming the expense.

Courier Work

There is a huge demand for couriers with sites where you can sign up for one off jobs or regular employment. Parcels start from the smallest of boxes and packets so you don’t need a huge car. You just need a reliable one. By searching online for ‘courier jobs’ you can easily gain access to the many agencies and firms looking for an extra pair of hands and an extra set of wheels.

Removals

These aren’t just for the man with a van and anyone with a second hand car can help remove small but heavy items of furniture and in particular, white goods. You may need a slightly bigger vehicle such as a 4×4 at least, but once again, this can be a lucrative sideline.

A Moving Advert

You may not be aware but many companies will pay you to display their ads and logos on their vehicles as you drive around. There are various claims as to how much you can really earn from this but it’s accepted that it is profitable. If you search online you can find agencies that will handle the placement of ads for you.

Rent Your Garage and Parking Space

If you’re happy to leave your car on the road and rent out your garage, there are many drivers who will take you up on your offer. Similarly, if you’re at work elsewhere and you leave behind a handy parking space, you may be surprised at how many drivers would like to use it. Once again, a search online will point you in the right direction and it’s claimed that a parking space can earn you good money in the most sought after areas.

Flea Markets

You can’t participate in a flea market without a car and if you’re looking for some extra cash, it pays to have a look round the house and see what you can take to the next sale. When you’re done, pack the items into your car and you’re away.

Become a Full Time Driver

Why not consider turning your driving into a full time living or a lucrative sideline. With specialized tests and exams, you can become a private hire driver or even a chauffeur. If you have a prestige car you can even rent your vehicle out at weddings.

A car is one of our main expenses with running costs set to soar even further in the next few months. However, with a little research and a little imagination, you really can turn vehicle expense into profit in a number of ways.

Online Textbook Buyback

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

I know I’ve got some textbooks from college boxed up somewhere, and no doubt I probably won’t use them much again.

Some of the those books are probably so old they have changed editions.

Why do we save the old textbooks that we know we’ll never use? Are we going to read them again? Probably not. Are we going to put a bow on them to give them to our friends as birthday presents? Not so likely. Are we going to make some craft item like booksafes out of them?

Why not get rid of them AND make a little money at the same time?

I’ve come across a website that can help me get rid of some of my unwanted textbooks — they buy lots of different kinds of new and used books. It’s kinda like an online textbook buyback, and it’s for college students wanting to sell textbooks. You can type in the barcode numbers from the backs of your textbooks (the ISBN number) and click the sell books button and a price quote page shows up right away. That page will show whether they are purchasing those textbooks or not, and if they are, what price they’re purchasing them for (along with instructions how to sell them, etc.).

I think selling unwanted books is akin to recycling because instead of throwing them out, others who really need those books can get some good use out of them, and then of course the money is always nice, and a good idea, too, especially if there are other textbooks you want to buy.

Now would be a great time to find those boxes and unpack them.

Event Savers

Friday, August 5th, 2011

We recently held a group tour of very important people to one of our offsite facilities. We wanted our valuable guests to be comfortable, secure and punctual.

We, the coordinators, handled every aspect of the group tour from securing the hotel sleeping rooms, conference rooms, tour buses, food, audio visual and other needed items down to the finest detail.

Most companies would agree; our VIP’s are important to us.

At the beginning of the event, each individual was to be presented with his or her own personal agenda as not everyone would be attending the same conference meeting, tour, or meal the same as the next person.

We were at a quandry as to how to present several items to our guests including nametags.

The answer ended up being very simple.

We chose ‘around the neck’ badge holders capable of holding inserts. The front of the “color coded” insert showed their name and company affiliation along with an additional color coded dot.

The different colored inserts allowed us to easily sort the guests into smaller groups according to our predetermined schedule. The color coded dot enabled us to seat them easily into the different meeting rooms. We even included a ‘meal card’ to present to their meal server which identified their pre-chosen entrée.

The back of the insert included their own personal day to day agenda. This kept their agenda easily at hand. They had their room numbers, meeting times, etc… handy. This also kept the attendees from loosing their schedules.

Since part of our event included a tour of a secure facility we also went ahead and pre-authorized HID cards for certain members of faculty for the secure offsite buildings. This enabled the entire tour portion of the event to proceed very smoothly.

It’s sometimes the small things that get overlooked when creating a large event, whether a conference, a tour, a show, or any other public event. The air, hotel, conference rooms, meals and meeting spaces are easy to coordinate but the small things can be easily overlooked.

It pays to over-coordinate the details for a smooth running ship. In this instance, the badge holders with the details inside were event savers.

Boy or Girl

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

So what do you do when you’re expecting? Do you take the ultrasound (I’ve heard the noise is LOUD for the little one.) Or do you just wait and see?

Have you priced nursery equipment these days? Bedding and strollers and cribs? Man, the prices are INSANE!!!! Course it could just be that it’s been a L O N G time since I’ve shopped baby stuff.

If you wait, do you buy blue, or pink? Do you go with a non-specific nursery color like light green? Or yellow?

I’m sure you probably didn’t wait for the doctor to tell you you were pregnant. I’d venture a guess that you headed straight for the local drugstore and bought a little kit to tell you ‘if’ you were or not.

Did you know that you can buy a simple little test that’s very similar to the pregnancy test kits? YES, there IS a urine test to determine gender!

How cool is that?

You can now find out, in the comfort of your own home whether it’s a Boy or a Girl and then you can shop knowing that you’re buying and decorating with the right color!

It’s an easy and fun way to find out gender.
