Stretching Dollars

Boy or Girl

June 14th, 2011

So what do you do when you’re expecting? Do you take the ultrasound (I’ve heard the noise is LOUD for the little one.) Or do you just wait and see?

Have you priced nursery equipment these days? Bedding and strollers and cribs? Man, the prices are INSANE!!!! Course it could just be that it’s been a L O N G time since I’ve shopped baby stuff.

If you wait, do you buy blue, or pink? Do you go with a non-specific nursery color like light green? Or yellow?

I’m sure you probably didn’t wait for the doctor to tell you you were pregnant. I’d venture a guess that you headed straight for the local drugstore and bought a little kit to tell you ‘if’ you were or not.

Did you know that you can buy a simple little test that’s very similar to the pregnancy test kits? YES, there IS a urine test to determine gender!

How cool is that?

You can now find out, in the comfort of your own home whether it’s a Boy or a Girl and then you can shop knowing that you’re buying and decorating with the right color!

It’s an easy and fun way to find out gender.

Readin’ Down Under

June 13th, 2011

Every now and then I list a few household goods on that big auction site, and then a small percentage of that time, I end up selling to someone overseas.

It’s kind of cool. But it’s also kind of confusing. I tend to worry about the package the whole way there.

Have you ever shipped a gift down under? Have you ever bought off Amazon for shipment to a relative? Or a friend down under? Again, confusing…

The hot item this year has to be the Kindle! But which one do you buy for someone in say, Australia? Well, Amazon Kindle Australia can help you make sure you get the right Kindle for Australia.

This is especially great for those planning their own trip to Australia. :)

Comingled

June 8th, 2011

Today I’m sitting here in a little restaurant where the food is mingled cuisines, in other words, there’s a little Mexican and little Italian and even a little Greek.

Because there are SO many choices, I opted for something I’ve not ever had before, a Greek meal which included Greek yogurt. You might ask “What is Greek yogurt“?

Good question. It has a very different flavor to me (since I’m used to the usual fruity combos found in the refrigerated section of your store for ages and ages).

To me, it’s tangier. You might even find it smoother. It’s closer to nature, that is for certain.

Want to try it yourself? Grab yourself some Greek yogurt coupons and get to the store! You’ll prove yourself frugal for using the coupons and smart for choosing a healthier alternative to regular yogurt!

UK Codes

June 7th, 2011

This week I bought an evaporative air cooler. It’s the modern version of the old swamp coolers, remember those?

It’s for a grandson that moved into an un-airconditioned garage.

I bought it online.

You know me, I never buy ANYTHING online that I don’t have a coupon for, or a free shipping code! They’re so easy to find these days.

I have my favorite spots to check for a coupon code and I bet you do too, but, every now and then I find a new place.

www.discountdiscount.co.uk
Sure, it’s from the UK, but don’t you ever ship something to someone over there? Relatives stationed overseas? You’ll save by getting a discount code and even IF you have to pay shipping, it’ll be cheaper because the distance is less.

Next time you’re buying a gift for someone ‘over the water’, check ‘em out!

Chilly Fingers

May 25th, 2011

I realize it’s practically summertime, but I had to share…

I do a lot of WORK in the garage. That’s where I make ‘things’ and where I maintain my Ebay ’stuff’ as well as my packing and shipping. It’s free space ya know.

But it sure can be cold in the wintertime.

This past season, I remedied the situation! I went out, looked around at the different storage heaters and bought myself an upright one.

TONS of difference in how much I was able to get down out there, and how long I was able to take the cold. It can be hard sewing, or packing, or ‘just about anything’ once those fingers get chilly!

My options, before the acquisition were small. Leave the door to the house OPEN, to let some heat out there. De-vent the dryer to let some of that heat inside (not recommended), install a separate heat unit (too costly), hook up a wood-burning stove (kind of messy) or opt for the small heater.

Heater it was!

You only use the heater right where you are, so you don’t waste energy heating the entire space. Today’s small heaters are energy efficient too, in fact, my electric bill (we’re total electric) stayed around $100 per month, even WITH the heater.

My only problem was WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?

Save $ at Disneyland Secrets

May 11th, 2011

I’ve a relative that decided on a whim to rent a mini-van and haul her kiddos to Disneyland. They did everything impromptu and luckily for them it all worked out great.

I’ve got a friend that planned her Disneyland vacation to the tee! Her’s was less ‘impromptu’ and was able to take advantage of many a special (because of the coordination) than the relative was.

Her secret?

Well she had two.

(1) She created an itinerary so that they managed to be in the right places at the right times for all the ’special’ events and bargain prices.
(2) She utilized Disneyland secret tips garnered from an ex-Disney employee!

This ex-Disneyland employee knows all the ‘inside’ information that allows people to not only find the cheapest tickets but where to find freebies!

Plus inside info on which rides are best, which ones to miss, best places to eat (and the ones to look out for). She tells you which shows to be sure to catch and which ones to avoid.

You TOO can benefit from learning some Disneyland secret tips by following this link, buying the INSIDE information before you head out on vacation.

You’re sure to save WAY MORE than the price of this book, it’s less than the price of a carload of drinks at your favorite drive in!

Best Places to Retire in Florida

April 3rd, 2011

I’ve mentioned before that Chili-man wants to move to Florida, specifically the Jacksonville area. I’ve googled the area, and I think that IF I were to move to Florida that a good compromise might be the St Augustine area. It’s not too far from his proposed locale.

Of course that’s just from looking at a map. I’ve not been to Florida, for any length of time, in years, although we did stop in Pensacola on a trip about ten years ago.

Consequently that’s about the same time I started getting videos and brochures in the mail from various retirement places all touting come see the best places to retire in Florida. Many even had really good ‘come visit’ offers. But we’ve never taken any of them.

Have you looked into retiring into a community? I suppose it would have it’s benefits. There’d be plenty of other people around so you wouldn’t be lonely. There’s bound to be many people with interests that mirror your own so you should be able to make friends easily.

There are even all-inclusive resort style communities with just about everything you could ask for. You could have golf, and other athletic ops including wellness centers and classes. You know exercise is important for your health during retirement.

These senior communities start at age 55! When did 55 year olds become seniors? But then again, lots of people get to retire in their fifties and moving to a place where everything you need is close at hand could certainly be a boon. As we get older, we like things to be simpler.

Neighborhoods where people meet and mingle, all in residences of their own with top of the line amenities from luxurious bathrooms to top of the line kitchens.

It’s certainly something that people approaching retirement should at least take a look at. Sure beats shoveling snow and lawn work!

Garage Sale Season Has Started!

March 21st, 2011

Garage sale season has finally started!

I love garage sales because you never know what you might find.

Or not…

:)

I stopped at three on Saturday. The first one had the whole street full of cars. I had to WAIT for some customers to leave before I could park anywhere near the place. People were leaving carrying sacks. ALL OF THEM.

Oh, anticipation was getting to me. I SO wanted to park blocking someone’s driveway just so I could hurry and get in there before all the good stuff was gone. I wanted to block the mailman by parking in front of a mailbox.

But I was good.

I waited.

Almost patiently.

Then someone actually left! YEAH! I parked and high-tailed it in there.

At first glance, I thought NO, there’s nothing here for me. Then I saw their DVD’s. TONS of them. Two bucks a piece.

Oh how many to pick? Should I just get one or two? I opted for five making my purchase an even ten.

I worried if maybe I was duplicating something I already owned. I wondered if I was choosing something worth two bucks…. I chose Stargate, one of my all time favorite films that I knew I didn’t have. I ROBOT which I ‘didn’t’ think I owned, The Edge because I like that movie… picked up the war one for Chiliman and took a gamble on Strange Days. (We watched that one yesterday - NOT a keeper.)

I did pretty good.
